The Price of Freedom

It has been a while since I updated this site. The last two soldiers to die made me realize that I was being too lazy. Every day Canadian soldiers are paying the price of damaging the cause of those who would attack our way of life and plunge our society into the same medieval barbarity that they held Afghanistan in for years. Some have paid with their lives but all pay with bits of themselves. We need to remember that and we need to remember the sacrifices of the Service-people and their families.

I have updated the list of Afghanistan Fatilities and linked each name to a page that includes some basic information and some links to press releases from the Department of National Defence. I'm not going into personal information right now because I hope that you who know the soldiers will give some thoughts and insight to them. I will watch for comments and try to bring stuff into the pages from them.

Just a thought and a prayer for Major Raymond Ruckpaul. I didn't know him and I can't begin to understand what brought him to taking his own life. I know that the very act of deploying for a long time is very stressful. Going into such a place as Kabul would magnify that many times over anything I have experienced. Who knows what brought him to the breaking point? That kind of extreme stress is one of the many normal forms of injury that every deployed person carries with them for a long time. The small number of people that it has broken is testament to the strength of the people we send into harm's way.

May God bless and protect all of them and theirs.
